Please watch your speed on the streets around our school.
Also, please note that the front parking lot is a staff and
visitor parking lot, and not a drop off area. Our main pickup
and dropoff area is located off Kidston Road, on the west
side of the school. Please note that the parent drop off and
parking area is available all day.
.IMPORTANT! Student Allergy
Alert
Our school has several students who have severe allergies
to peanuts and nuts. These allergies are manifested in anaphylaxis.
This is a life threatening condition and must be taken very
seriously. Please help us keep ALL our students safe by refraining
from sending any nut products to school with your children.
Even having nut residue on your hands and transferring it
by using the doors may mean tragedy for some students. We
thank you for your help!!.

Head Lice
Headlice is common in school-aged children. Headlice
do not cause disease. Itchiness from head lice can
be irritating and uncomfortable for children. Head Lice spread
easily to others, so it’s important for families to
help prevent and control its spread. Outbreaks are more common
following vacations.
How to Prevent Head Lice
Please check your child’s head every week for headlice
Teach your child not to share head gear (i.e. hats, hair
accessories, scarves, helmets, combs)
If you would like more
information on head lice and treatment, please call the
school, Health Centre/Unit or go to www.interiorhealth.ca
Indoor Shoe Policy
We have decided to adhere to a strict indoor shoe policy.
Students are asked to remove their outdoor shoes on the mats
at the entrances to the school. Students then carry their
shoes to their classrooms put them in their lockers (later
we will have mats for wet footwear) and put on a pair of clean
shoes that are worn inside the school only.
As students need a good pair of runners for phys. ed. we
would recommend that the all students’ indoor shoes
be good running shoes. At recess, lunch and after school students
are encouraged to carry their outdoor shoes to the mats and
put them on there to leave the building. This may seem like
a small thing to get so serious about but it really does help
to keep our floors scratch free and clean. We have noticed
a huge difference already. We really ask that parents do everything
they can to ensure their child has a pair of indoor shoes.
Thank you for your help and support.
Parent Volunteers
Kidston Elementary School is blessed with many wonderful
volunteers and we are very grateful. Without the support of
the parent community we would not be able to attend many of
the field trips we organize for the students. Our district
field trip policy sets the limits of supervision as one adult
for every 10 students in Grades K-5 and one adult to 15 students
in Grade 6-12. This applies to field trips within a distance
of 25 kilometers or less from the City of Vernon. In preparation
for our volunteer sign up in September of 2008 we wanted to
let all parents know the guidelines around the requirements
for volunteers.
The district policy 5.7.0 states, “The Board requires
all volunteers having unsupervised access to children to authorize
the local RCMP office to conduct a criminal record check.
The results of this check must be satisfactory to the board.”
While this doesn’t mean that all volunteers will need
a criminal record check, it does mean that those parents who
volunteer to help transport others on field trips will need
it. As well volunteer drivers will need to complete a volunteer
driver authorization form and copies of liability Insurance
coverage. We realize that this process is very inconvenient
but it is in place to be sure we are attending to the safety
and security of all students. Thank you so much for your support
and help with this matter.
Insurance
As part of the District’s commitment to addressing
students’ needs and parents’ concerns, School
District 22 (Vernon) has arranged for comprehensive blanket
Accident Insurance for district students. You may have some
questions about the School Day Coverage plan and we’d
like to help answer them. Please read this
document for more information.
