At Kidston, to improve student achievement in literacy we work on building a literacy-suporrtive culture that starts with where a student is at and works to move each child's learning forward. We work on building oral language, reading and writing skills through the teaching of phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

Kidston has been incorporating the Play is the Way program throughout the school. Play is the Way is a social emotional program that recognizes the importance of understanding how the brain processes and responds to emotions and provides educators with valuable insights and strategies to effectively support their students. It is based on key principles that are used on announcements, in assemblies and within the classrooms. Kidston uses the VIA 24 Character Strengths to help students with positive character development. The character strengths help nurtures character building, empowering students to flourish based on their individual strengths and helps move our students forward with a strength-based approach.

Our staff has been working to incorporate the First Peoples Principles of Learning into their everyday practice. We incorporate land acknowledgements on announcements and school assemblies. We have had Indigenous Lead teachers from our district help facilitate lessons on learning from the land at nearby Sovereign Park. We recognize orange shirt day, incorporate the four food chiefs into our students' learning of the core competencies and recognize Indigenous Day with Indigenous games and learning. As a staff we continue to work on our professional learning and continue to work on moving forward with reconciliation.
